Mike Pence on Friday became the first vice president of the United States to ever deliver a speech in person at the annual March for Life, a stark contrast to the cold shoulder the White House gave to the Women’s March held around the U.S. and the world last week.
In 1988, President Ronald Reagan delivered a speech in a pre-recorded video and in 2008, President George W. Bush spoke to people in the rally via telephone, the Hill reported.
But Pence’s presence would mark the first time a president or vice president has made a public appearance at the rally.
Since 1974, anti-abortion advocates have gathered every year in Washington, D.C., to rally against the landmark case that has united social conservatives including Republican lawmakers and presidents on the issue of abortion.
On Friday, a number of Republicans and conservatives including President Donald Trump offered their support to March for Life rally goers.
