Tyon Wells, 14, has been charged in adult court, accused of shooting and killing Zachary Parker, 17.
A video posted to Facebook Monday morning has been shared hundreds of times.
With family and friends standing behind him, a family member in the video says Tyon was raised without a father, surrounded by gangs, drugs and violence.
“But he has always had the support of his family, who worked tirelessly to steer him away from the lure of illegal activity,” family member Sherman Wells says.
County Attorney Don Kleine made the decision to charge Tyon as an adult, a decision he says was made for good reason.
“We have a sound basis for filing it the way we have at this point in time,” said Kleine, who noted he had seen the video. “It’s an ongoing process.”
Kleine said other social media pictures paint a different story, pointing to ones that include alcohol and a gun, posted on Tyon’s Facebook page when he was as young as 11.
