I’m glad that this almost-17-years-old-and-somehow-prepubescent hero is out there fighting our fights, looking out for us, and overall leading us towards a greener future.
Swedish teenager Greta Thunberg, who has inspired a global movement for climate change, delivered a strong message to U.S. lawmakers: ‘Wake up.’
‘I don’t want you to listen to me, I want you to listen to the scientists,’ she at a House hearing on Wednesday, noting that she wanted her opening testimony to be a 2018 United Nations report, which called for limiting global warming to 1.5 degrees Celsius.
‘I want you to then unite behind the science – and then I want you to take real action.’
Wrapping up a six-day visit to Washington, D.C., the 16-year-old Thunberg rallied a room full of Democratic lawmakers and activists, urging them to follow scientific warnings and push for strong measures to combat climate change.
‘This is not the time and place for dreams. This is the time to wake up,’ Thunberg said behind a lowered podium at the ornate House of Representatives Ways and Means Committee room.

Thunberg spent the day in Congress and on the steps of the Supreme Court, lending her star power to join U.S and youth activists who were drumming up attention and support ahead of a global climate strike on Friday.
Thunberg, founder of the ‘Fridays For Future’ weekly school walkouts to demand government climate-change action, submitted a 2018 report by the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change at the hearing in lieu of testimony.

On Wednesday, she called out the United States for being the ‘biggest carbon polluter in history’ and the top producer of oil.
She criticized climate change denier President Donald Trump’s decision to withdraw the United States from the Paris Climate Change Agreement early in his tenure.
‘You are also the only nation in the world who has signaled with strong intention to leave the Paris agreement because it was a bad deal for the U.S.,’ she said.
She also did some Queenly stuff outside the Supreme Court.
She had a meeting with Obama about how evil white people are and how bad Orange Man is.

The conservative-leaning Competitive Enterprise Institute has put together a lengthy compilation of apocalyptic predictions dating back decades that did not come to pass, timed as Democratic presidential candidates and climate activists refocus attention on the issue.
The dire predictions, often repeated in the media, warned of a variety of impending disasters – famine, drought, an ice age, and even disappearing nations – if the world failed to act on climate change.
An Associated Press headline from 1989 read “Rising seas could obliterate nations: U.N. officials.” The article detailed a U.N. environmental official warning that entire nations would be eliminated if the world failed to reverse warming by 2000.
hen there were the fears that the world would experience a never-ending “cooling trend in the Northern Hemisphere.” That claim came from an “international team of specialists” cited by The New York Times in 1978.
Just years prior, Time magazine echoed other media outlets in suggesting that “another ice age” was imminent. “Telltale signs are everywhere — from the unexpected persistence and thickness of pack ice in the waters around Iceland to the southward migration of a warmth-loving creature like the armadillo from the Midwest,” the magazine warned in 1974. The Guardian similarly warned in 1974 that “Space satellites show new Ice Age coming fast.”
In 1970, The Boston Globe ran the headline, “Scientist predicts a new ice age by 21st century.” The Washington Post, for its part, published a Columbia University scientist’s claim that the world could be “as little as 50 or 60 years away from a disastrous new ice age.”
Some of the more dire predictions came from Paul Ehrlich, a biologist who famously urged population control to mitigate the impacts of humans on the environment. Ehrlich, in 1969, warned that “everybody” would “disappear in a cloud of blue steam in 20 years,” The New York Times reported.
According to The Salt Lake Tribune, Ehrlich, warning of a “disastrous” famine,” urged placing “sterilizing agents into staple foods and drinking water.”
This time the Climate Apocalypse is coming for real though because the science is now for real, unlike the science used for those past predictions.
