The Waffen SS started out as a way to bypass the original officers of the German army.
Since they were from the previous regime, it could not be guaranteed that they had earned their positions through merit.
Many of them were also suspicious of National Socialism and they tried to make it as hard as possible for people to volunteer for the new SS.
However the will of the people to do their best was so strong that thousands joined, despite the long length of service they had to sign up to.
Once the war started, the need for the SS increased and other Germanic peoples were allowed to take part.
The SS were the bravest fighters the world has ever seen, the officers fought side by side with their men, something which had not been seen in Europe for at least 500 years.
They were a modern day order of Knights, sworn to protect Europe from Godless Communism.
Eventually the desire from the foreign races to join the fight against Bolshevism became so strong, that a third type of Waffen SS was formed.
This was the international Waffen SS and it even had a Moslem regiment.
