I was feeling slightly depressed. Though I figured it was simply because this is the coldest day I’ve seen in many years. It turns out, science has already worked out that this is indeed the most depressing day of the year.
It’ll be good to have this day behind us.
From Cleveland.com:
Today is the most depressing day of the year, according to British researchers.
Think about it. Temperatures are in the single digits, you’re back to the normal work routine and the only reminders of the holidays are the lingering pine needles from the Christmas tree. Makes sense, doesn’t it?
In 2005, psychologist Cliff Arnall created “Blue Monday”, which he said fell during the last full week of January. His formula factored things like debt, weather and the number of days since Christmas.
But the Daily Mail reported researchers compiled for than 2 million tweets over the past three years and looked for negative language. They discovered people were six times as likely to complain about the weather on the first Monday of the year. And on that same day, five times the average number of people were tweeting about guilt, probably from already given up on their New Year’s health goals.
Those same researchers found Christmas Eve and Christmas Day to be the happiest days of the year.
