Presently in Austria, right-wing Freedom Party (FPÖ) is leading in polls, according to a study done by the ‘market institute,’ published in Der Standard on Tuesday.
The largest number of votes for chancellor, however, went to the leader of the opposition centre-left Greens, Eva Glawischnig.
The FPÖ had 28 percent of the votes, which was a third more than in the general elections in September last year.
The Social Democrats (SPÖ) came in second with 23 percent, 3.8 percent less than in the last elections. The SPÖ’s coalition partner, the conservative People’s Party (ÖVP) had 19 percent (23.9 percent in the last elections). The Greens had 14 percent, which was 1.5 percent more than in September.
401 people over the age of 16 were polled between August 21 and 25.
If it were possible to directly elect the chancellor, 20 percent said they would vote for Glawischnig. 15 percent would vote for the current chancellor, Werner Faymann of the SPÖ, 14 percent for FPÖ leader Heinz-Christian Strache, and 11 percent for Michael Spindelegger, who stepped down as ÖVP leader on Tuesday.
I will grant you that few of these parties are as hardcore as we are, but it is always a good thing when public opinion moves right. They are coming towards us, and it is not sensible to complain about the pace they are taking.
