Just to be clear, these arrests are all potentially illegal. Probably, the private universities have a right to declare students to be trespassing. I do not think a public school has that right.
Just imagine though: this is nationwide. It is state authorities doing the crackdown, but it is being organized in Washington.

Jill Stein of the US Green Party has been arrested at a pro-Palestinian rally at Washington University in St. Louis, Missouri. Stein’s arrest came amid a nationwide crackdown on anti-Israel demonstrations.
Stein, her campaign manager, and her deputy campaign manager were among 100 people detained at a protest camp on Washington University’s campus on Saturday. Video footage shows the 73-year-old being led away from the camp by three police officers, her hands apparently bound behind her back with zip ties.
The encampment was set up to demand that the university divest from Boeing, which manufactures arms used by the Israeli military to strike Gaza, Stein’s campaign manager, Jason Call, said in a statement.

“The Stein campaign supports the demands of the students and their peaceful protest and assembly on campus,” Call said. “Student protest for peace and civil liberties has always represented the best part of our collective moral conscience. Solidarity.”

Police officers arrested hundreds of demonstrators in raids on 21 campuses on Wednesday, then hundreds more in similar sweeps on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday.
The media is not really covering the scale of these protests. They are happening at more than 70 campuses right now, and the police are moving in to attack most of them.
Most media is reporting “hundreds” of arrests in the last five days, though the real number seems to be higher than 1,000. I don’t have the resources to go through and do a full tally, but from what I’ve read, it appears that it could even be upwards of 2,000.
The number of arrests is probably irrelevant, but the media seems to want to keep it in the “hundreds” range, as “thousands arrested” sounds much more severe.
The assumption in Washington, where both Republicans and Democrats are demanding these mass arrests, appears to be that Americans are fat, stupid idiots who will view these protesters as “troublemakers.” But at some point, even if you are an Israel supporter, it seems like you’re going to have to ask what exactly is going on here. No one has any explanation beyond “Jews feel scared, so we’re ending freedom of speech.”
