We recently reported that the UK government plans on giving money to mothers who return to work, further weakening the traditional family. A Russian lawmaker has proposed a very different measure that would affect the welfare of women. From the Daily Mail:
Women’s rights activists in Russia have reacted with anger to proposals to give women two days paid leave a month when they are on their periods.
Mikhail Degtyaryov, a member of the nationalist LDPR party, wrote on his website that he had proposed the draft law to increase the protection of women at the workplace.
‘During that period, most women experience psychological and physiological discomfort,’ said Mr Degtyaryov, 32, who is married with two sons.
Feminists take issue with any suggestion that women are different from men in any way, even when those pointing out the difference are acting with compassion.
Special treatment of women during menstruation is found in traditional cultures around the world, and a renewal of this attitude in a European country would be quite noteworthy. Although there has been some debate about the true nature of Russia’s recent trend towards conservatism, when compared to what is being done in America and Western Europe this appears to be another situation where their lawmakers are putting us to shame.
