WSJ:
Ukrainian officials accused Russia of allowing tanks and heavy artillery to cross the border into Ukraine’s restive southeastern regions, in what would represent a substantial upgrade of the weaponry in the hands of pro-Russia separatists there.
Ukraine’s newly inaugurated President Petro Poroshenko told his Russian counterpart, Vladimir Putin, in a telephone call on Thursday that the tanks’ crossing the border was “unacceptable,” his spokesman said, according to the Associated Press.
The Kremlin confirmed the call, which it said was initiated by Kiev, but didn’t mention tanks or other weapons.
The separatists, meanwhile, said that they had acquired three tanks and dispatched them to counter Ukrainian government forces who have been fighting for weeks to oust them from the Donetsk and Luhansk regions, which border Russia.
The separatist statement, carried on Russian state news agencies, didn’t indicate where the tanks had come from.
Mr. Poroshenko convened an emergency meeting with security officials to discuss the situation. A statement on the presidential website said army and border guards had “regained control over the border stretching for more than” 100 kilometers (62 miles), “even when dealing with tanks.”
The claim couldn’t immediately be confirmed. Western officials in recent days have said that Ukraine had lost control of substantial stretches of the border to separatist forces.
Mr. Poroshenko also raised his concerns in a phone call with José Manuel Barroso, president of the European Union’s executive body, the European Commission.
“President Poroshenko conveyed to me his extreme concern with the ongoing armed unrest in Eastern Ukraine and also today the incident with Russian tanks that, according to the Ukrainian authorities, have crossed into Ukrainian territory,” Mr. Barroso said.
The US would be hardpressed to even give a statement if Putin invaded tomorrow, what with their present calls for a third war with Iraq in the name of… whatever.
