KTUL:

Tahlequah police have identified two people killed in a domestic shooting following a marshal-involved shooting Wednesday night near Pamela Street and Park Hill Road.

Officers received multiple calls of gunshots just before 8 p.m.

The last caller said her sister, 40-year-old Rachel Maxwell, had been shot in the head by her ex-husband, 37-year-old Eddie Ray Maxwell Sr. She said she ran out of the apartment and didn’t know where Eddie was when she called.

Multiple officers arrived at the scene shortly after the calls. Eddie refused to come out of the apartment, so officers went inside.

“I could see Mrs. Maxwell in the living room. Didn’t know how bad she was hurt, but I could tell she was in serious duress. She was not mobile and appeared injured,” said Tahlequah Police Chief Nate King.

Police found Eddie in the living room with a revolver in his hand. Officers tried to convince him to surrender, but he refused.

The Cherokee Nation Marshal Service SWAT Team was called in to assist. The team took over with the suspect and the officers went outside.

“At one point in time, he said he would drop his gun and surrender, but when we said, ‘You were going to drop your gun and surrender,’ he said, ‘The only way I’m coming out of this apartment is if you carry me out,'” said King.

A few minutes later, one of the marshals fired a gunshot, hitting and killing Eddie.

Officers found Rachel’s body inside the apartment.
