In the wake of the Glenn Miller debacle, the SPLC has proceeded to kick us while we’re down, releasing a report condemning Stormfront, claiming that “nearly 100” people have been murdered by posters there in the last five years.
The report, though technically probably accurate, is sensationalistic and dishonest in its form, given that 77 of the “nearly 100” were killed by Anders Breivik, who apparently only made four posts on the site. Making the whole thing a lot less shocking.
Still, the fact of the matter is that because White Nationalism is a fringe ideology, it does attract all sorts of weird and mentally unstable persons.
The SPLC’s article on the report begins with the following:
A typical murderer drawn to the racist forum Stormfront.org is a frustrated, unemployed, white adult male living with his mother or an estranged spouse or girlfriend. She is the sole provider in the household. Forensic psychologists call him a “wound collector.” Instead of building his resume, seeking employment or further education, he projects his grievances on society and searches the Internet for an excuse or an explanation unrelated to his behavior or the choices he has made in life.
His escalation follows a predictable trajectory. From right-wing antigovernment websites and conspiracy hatcheries, he migrates to militant hate sites that blame society’s ills on ethnicity and shifting demographics. He soon learns his race is endangered — a target of “white genocide.” After reading and lurking for a while, he needs to talk to someone about it, signing up as a registered user on a racist forum where he commiserates in an echo chamber of angry fellow failures where Jews, gays, minorities and multiculturalism are blamed for everything.
Assured of the supremacy of his race and frustrated by the inferiority of his achievements, he binges online for hours every day, self-medicating, slowly sipping a cocktail of rage. He gradually gains acceptance in this online birthing den of self-described “lone wolves,” but he gets no relief, no practical remedies, no suggestions to improve his circumstances. He just gets angrier.
This description does, I believe, cover a fair number of people who post on WN websites.
Conspiracy websites have a similar demographic of lonely, weird people, who need a reason to feel better about themselves, and many of Alex Jones’ followers have been involved in shootings as well.
However, the fact that weird psychos who have failed at life are drawn to the White Advocacy community has nothing to do with the ideology itself, but rather with the standing the ideology has in the larger whole of society. Any fringe movement is going to have cult-like elements involved.
There is no psychological difference between a person who decides to blame the actual causes of social strife – the Jews – and one who decides to blame some invisible Illuminati or Scientology’s aliens, if he is doing it due to personal emotional and psychological problems.
Our goal needs to be to remain normal. We do not need to go on witchhunts for weird people, but if we see someone acting weird we should attempt to distance ourselves from them. We have no need for weirdos – the fact that they swell our numbers slightly makes no difference, given that it is they who keep other normal people from joining with us.
It is worthy of note here that Glenn Miller’s breakdown seems to have much less to do with the type of weirdness that most of these shooters the SPLC lists suffer from, much more to do with alcohol, something which also has nothing to do with the ideology of White Nationalism.
