Elon Musk’s Cybertruck presentation was one of the funniest things I’ve seen this week.
And there have been a lot of funny things this week.
The stock drop makes it funnier.
Shares of Tesla Inc fell more than six percent Friday after the ‘armored glass’ windows on its newly unveiled electric pickup truck shattered during a demonstration.
The sharp drop wiped $768 million off Elon Musk’s estimated $23.6 billion fortune, Forbes reports, after the embarrassing moment in which the CEO was heard muttering ‘oh my f***ing God’ as the glass smashed.
In the much-anticipated unveiling to cheering fans late on Thursday, the Tesla boss had taken aim at the design, power and durability of mainstream trucks, only to be shaken when his boast about his new vehicle’s windows backfired.
The company’s shares fell to $333.41 at the close play Friday.
…
Shares of Ford and General Motors rose about two per cent. General Motors’ first electric pickup will go on sale in 2021, around the same time as Tesla’s, GM Chief Executive Mary Barra told investors on Thursday.
‘Musk has been enthusiastic about his Blade Runner-inspired design for months, but we were still surprised how futuristic he went with this one and believe it may shatter his dreams,’ Cowen analysts wrote in a note.
‘While we are pleased to see Tesla enter the most profitable segment of the North American passenger car market, we do not see this vehicle in its current form being a success.’
Such a pity.
But let’s be real.
It was more than just the windows shattering that caused this.
Firstly, the truck looks retarded, even with intact windows.
Secondly, what is the point of this truck?
Tesla is a company that makes cars for nerds and is lined up to make driverless semi-trucks endorsed by the government. It’s not a company that makes products for hillbillies or farmers or people who listen to Alan Jackson and whoever it is that typically buys pickup trucks.
So who is going to buy this car?
Black drug dealers?
That’s almost what I thought they were aiming at when they started talking about bulletproofing and so on.
But even if the truck is expensive, it isn’t really gaudy enough to appeal to blacks. Also, the “rich black drug dealer” market is not a huge one.
Furthermore, part of the stock drop might have been simply because Elon was acting so weird during the presentation. I mean, he really is a weird sonovabitch.
He clearly hasn’t managed to get a PR team to tell him how he should behave in public, so he should probably go full Howard Hughes, and get someone else to do these presentations.
Keanu Reeves is good at this sort of thing.
But the window breaking definitely spoke to the incompetence of Elon.
How did they not test that beforehand? How is it even possible they didn’t test that beforehand?
My theory is that someone installed the wrong glass. It is a prototype. And it isn’t like glass that could have withstood a toss of a small metal ball like that hasn’t existed for like 70 years or more.
So it really was a massive screw-up.
I said that he should have just switched it up and said “now we’re going to show you how to destroy the rest of it” and blew the whole thing up on stage, while playing TOOL.
It would have fit into the whole “David Copperfield magic show” vibe of the presentation.
Anyway, it is incredible to me that Elon is still around, blowing up rockets, smashing up Cybertrucks, smoking weed, acting like a freak.
I just don’t think he is very smart.
The implication is that he is some kind of idiot savant or whatever. But all information leads one to believe that he is simply an idiot.
