Police have all their suspects in custody from a Griffith shooting that left a Portage High School senior dead, an official said.

Alayna Ortiz, 18, of Valparaiso, was shot in the head Jan. 9 while in a red SUV in the parking lot of Park West Apartments in the 1800 block of North Arbogast Street, court records state.

The shooting stemmed from an attempted robbery in Gary earlier that day over a marijuana debt, police said.

Griffith police announced Wednesday that they had all four of their suspects from the homicide in custody. A fifth suspect was fatally shot in February in Illinois, according to police.

Three men, Giovante Galloway, Juarez Rogers and Elrice Williams, have been charged with murder in Ortiz’s death as of Wednesday afternoon.

Galloway admitted to his role in the planned robbery that resulted in Ortiz’s death, Martin said. Galloway said he tried to rob William “Mike” Hawkins, Ortiz’s boyfriend and the driver of the vehicle Ortiz was shot in, because he owed Hawkins $1,600 for marijuana, police said. Galloway planned to use the robbery money to repay Hawkins for the debt, Martin said.

Galloway said he contacted his uncle, Juarez Rogers, to assist with the robbery “but no weapons were to be used,” according to Martin. Rogers, Galloway and three men Galloway said he did not know attempted the robbery, which resulted in the killing of Ortiz, police said.
