WYFF:
Jonathan Rhodes’ double murder trial started Tuesday morning.
Rhodes is charged with murder, kidnapping and burglary in the October 2012 deaths of Helen and Gary Wells.
The Wellses were found dead inside their Terramont Drive home on Oct. 3, 2012.
During opening statements, 13th Circuit Solicitor Walt Wilkins told the jury that Rhodes had help carrying out the crime from the Wellses’ housekeeper, Shirley Rogers.
The defense attorney told jurors that Rhodes is innocent and asked them to separate the emotions of the case from the facts.
The first witness to testify was the son-in-law of the Wellses’ next-door neighbor, who was tending to his father-in-law’s yard. The neighbor testified that Rogers asked him for help after seeing Gary Wells lying on the floor. The neighbor entered the home through the unlocked front door and called 911 after finding Gary Wells lying in a pool of blood in an office-type room and Helen Wells in a bedroom.
A former Department of Public Safety forensics investigator said Gary Wells had deep gashes on his legs and cuts to his abdomen, hands and head. The forensics officer said he also found a blood-covered knife nearby.
The same officer said he found Helen Wells in another room. She had multiple wounds to her shoulders and an apparent gunshot wound on her right bicep, the officer testified.
The investigator said he found shell casings, an unfired bullet and a second knife in the vicinity of the bodies.
