I don’t want to just attack everything Trump does based on the fact that he did it.
I would love if he would start doing good things again.
But it just seems like everything he does now, even if it seems good at first, is totally shitty.
The United States will no longer provide foreign assistance to El Salvador, Guatemala and Honduras.
A State Department spokesperson told The Hill in a statement Saturday that the agency was directed by President Trump to halt aid to the so-called Northern Triangle countries.
“At the Secretary’s instruction, we are carrying out the President’s direction and ending FY 2017 and FY 2018 foreign assistance programs for the Northern Triangle,” the statement said. “We will be engaging Congress as part of this process.”
…
Homeland Security Secretary Kirstjen Nielsen said in a statement Friday that she signed a “historic” regional compact this week with representatives of the Northern Triangle countries. She said the countries agreed to “combat human smuggling and trafficking, crack down on transnational criminals fueling the crisis, and strengthen border security to prevent irregular migration.”
President Trump on Friday said that the countries “set up” migrant caravans, according to CNN.
“We were paying them tremendous amounts of money. And we’re not paying them anymore. Because they haven’t done a thing for us. They set up these caravans,” he reportedly said.
Trump previously threatened to cut off aid to the countries in December over alleged caravans, accusing them of “doing nothing for the United States but taking our money.”
So, I don’t support foreign aid for anyone. I think the concept is insane. We’ve got white people homeless and dying from drugs and we’re shipping taxpayer cash outside of the country.
But here’s the thing: these people get domestic aid when they rush our border. And we are looking at 1.5 million of them getting in this year.
So is this the time to cut the foreign aid? While they are all rushing us, and guaranteed aid in our country?
Maybe it doesn’t matter. Probably all of this money just goes into the pockets of corrupt politicians anyway, rather than doing anything that would keep people from wanting to flee the country.
But large portions of the remittances that these “migrants” send home also end up in the hands of corrupt politicians.
I don’t think there is any chance that this is going to slow the flow, whatever the case.
In the run-up to 2020, there are going to be a lot of moves like this that seem like maybe they are good. But as I’ve said, this train already wrecked, and the only possible way to salvage this ship is to fire Jared Kushner.
If Trump does that, he’ll have my attention.
I don’t care about any of the rest of this bullshit.
