Remember when Trump said NAFTA was a disaster? I guess it goes well with the rest of his new policies, then.
I hope you didn’t still have some faint glimmer of hope in your heart that Trump might sneak through one of his remaining promises. Forget about it.
We’re hitting levels of u-turn that shouldn’t even be possible. We’re u-turning so dramatically we risk shifting into another dimension – the u-dimension, where everything is backward and gay.
So what is it this time? Here’s the basic template:
Trump declared X was a disaster.
Trump promised he would undo X.
U-TURN!
Trump now says X is great and has no plan to change it.
Today’s “X” is NAFTA.
President Trump told the leaders of Canada and Mexico on Wednesday that the United States would not be pulling out of the North American Free Trade Agreement “at this time,” opening the door to future negotiations on the same day that Trump was considering signaling a strong intent to withdraw as a potential way of bringing the parties together at the deal-making table.
I don’t know why I’m putting an image of flip-flops here, but it feels right somehow.
Trump spoke with Mexican President Enrique Peña Nieto and Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau late Wednesday afternoon after reports circulated during the day that the president was contemplating withdrawing from NAFTA.
“Reports.”
Or, you know, his presidential campaign speeches.
“President Trump agreed not to terminate NAFTA at this time and the leaders agreed to proceed swiftly, according to their required internal procedures, to enable the renegotiation of the NAFTA deal to the benefit of all three countries,” the White House said in a statement late Wednesday.
Why would Mexico agree to negotiate in good faith if Trump abandoned his threat to pull from NAFTA?
Obviously, they know he’s not serious, and has no ability to enforce any demand. Or at least, they’ll know – if they read “The Art of the Deal.”
Rule 1 of deals: Announce all your threats were bluffs before starting negotiations.
News that Trump was weighing withdrawing from NAFTA drew sharp criticism from several Republican leaders, including Sen. Jeff Flake (R) and Sen. John McCain (R). McCain tweeted that Trump “shouldn’t abandon this vital trade agreement.”
There exists no word – or combination of words – strong enough to fully express the depth of my hatred for John McCain.
I have one question about McCain: how can a man survive when all of his blood has been replaced with pure liquid perfidy?
Earlier, three people familiar with the matter said Trump is seriously considering signing a document within days that would signal his intent to withdraw the United States from the agreement within six months.
If signed, the letter would begin a formal process that could see the United States exit the 23-year-old trade pact with Canada and Mexico, ratcheting up tensions among neighboring nations.
Yeah, we all remember that era – 3 weeks ago – when Trump was still saying stuff like that. It was a pretty cool time to be alive.
But now everyone has already accepted that the only thing that can pull us out of NAFTA – as well as every other Jew system – isn’t democracy but hardcore warlordism.
So none of this even really matters at this point.
