Zakarya Etarghi went into hiding following his brutal sex attack and searches of an address in Tyler Grove, Middleport, failed to find him.
But the 24-year-old was eventually tracked down to Lymedale Suites Aparthotel, off the A34 in Newcastle, where he was arrested two weeks after the attack.
Now the defendant – who was handed a nine-year prison term for robbery in 2012 – has been given a life sentence after being convicted of attempted murder and rape.
The victim – who is in her 50s – was raped in Leicester on August 3 and left for dead. She described the attack as ‘like something out of a horror film’. She suffered massive facial trauma, a complex open skull fracture, bleeding to the brain, spinal fractures and significant brain injuries.
DNA profiles obtained from blood on pieces of paper and cigarette packets in the defendant’s flat matched the woman.
