How much more of this are we willing to take?

The Sun:

An asylum seeker who raped a young virgin twice as she walked to her boyfriend’s house has been jailed for ten years.

Mebrehtom Abrha, from Eritrea, shoved his victim to the ground, ripped her dress and ignored her screams she was a virgin during the brutal attack last year.

The sick 25-year-old followed his victim for 10 minutes before attacking her, raping her twice and walking away “chillingly and casually”.

It happened as the 21-year-old victim, who described herself as “slightly drunk”, was walking back to her boyfriend’s from a night out in Liverpool city centre.

She had been intending to hail a cab but couldn’t find any, so began walking the mile and a half distance to his house, running part of the way as it was raining heavily.

She didn’t realise she was being followed until she passed Crown Park and spotted her attacker creeping up from behind.

Prosecuting David McLachlan said: “All she remembered was ending up on the ground. She guessed she had been thrown over.

“She remembered being shocked and thinking ‘this can’t be happening’. She started screaming, she was shouting ‘please don’t’. She said ‘I’m a virgin, please don’t do this to me’.

“She described how he got up and walked away in a casual manner. He didn’t run away, he just walked off.”

The victim suffered injuries to her back and neck during the horrific attack and was tested for sexually transmitted diseases, which thankfully came back negative.

The woman said: “I felt ashamed, dirty, disgusting and unclean. I felt horrible in myself and always felt exposed, even when I was covered up.

“I couldn’t go to church for months as I was angry at God. It made me question my faith and religion and what makes it worse is it happened right next to a church.

“I love Liverpool but after this I want to get away from Liverpool. I felt after this incident it was now tarnished for me and isn’t the city I first fell in love with.”

Abrha, who said nothing during the attack apart from the weird phrase “get a better number”, fled the city after police released CCTV of him following the attack.

Officials traced his movements back to Modo bar in Concert Square, where he was thrown out before drinking alone in two other bars and finally following his victim.

He was arrested at his home in Aston, Birmingham after a BBC Crimewatch appeal.
