Painting commemorating the heroic defence of Rorke’s Drift in 1879 – a victory for the forces of order against the forces of chaos.

A letter written by one of the White heroes who helped fight off 4,000 Zulu savages at the battle of Rorke’s Drift has been sold for £15,500, the Daily Mail reports.

Assistant Commissary Officer (ACO) Walter Dunne wrote the letter the day after the famous battle where 150 brave White patriots against all odds defeated the entire Zulu nation.

It gives the details of what happened and was written on the back of the delivery notes for the mealie bags, which were used to build a makeshift defensive wall around the White regiment.

Also at the auction were letters by Lieutenant Gonville Bromhead, who was awarded the Victoria Cross for his bravery in commanding the 2nd Battalion of the 24th Foot.

The righteous massacre of the lawless primitives that inspired generations of White school boys, was made into the iconic film ‘Zulu’ featuring Michael Caine and Stanley Baker.

If the film were made today, the leader of the regiment would be a woman and the savages would be pacifists whose intentions were misunderstood, causing them to be massacred for no reason despite the protestations of a wise-cracking humanist Jew.

Walter Dunne wrote the letter the day after the battle and it was discovered in an album of letters, paintings and other items collected by Captain WJ Warneford’s wife Winifred.

The letter in full:

Rorke’s Drift/ 24 Jan.r ’79/

My dear Warneford, Sad news about the 1/24th. (1st Battalion, 24th Foot) 5Cd commanded by Col. Pulleine were cut to pieces and the camp sacked. 20 Officers are missing.

About 1000 of the Kafirs came in here and attacked us on the same day (22nd). We had got about 2 hours notice and fortified the place with trap of grain biscuit boxes &c. They came on most determinedly on all sides. They drove our fellows out of the Hospital, killed the patients and burned the place.

They made several attempts to storm us but the soldiers (B Co of 24th under Bromhead) kept up such a steady killing fire that they were driven back each time. We had only 80 men, the contingent having bolted before a shot was fired. The fight was kept up all night & in the morning the Kafirs retreated leaving 351 dead bodies.

Dalton was wounded in the shoulder and temp clerk Byrne killed & 12 of the men… W A Dunne (over)

Some of the missing are Pulleine, Col. Dunford, Capt. Russell, Hodson (killed), Anstey, Daly, Mostyn, Dyer, Griffith, Pope, Austin, Pulleine (2 Mr.) Shepherd (S… major) Wardell (killed), Younghusband, Degacher, Porteous, Carage Dyson, Atkinson – Coghill is believed to have escaped & also Melvill.
