Jo-Anne Finney and her children, Taylor and Connor Stevenson, speak to the media after testifying at the Eaton Centre shooting trial on Thursday.

After seeing a matinee performance of Bring It On on the afternoon of June 2, 2012, Jo-Anne Finney and her teenage kids, Taylor and Connor Stevenson, stopped at the Eaton Centre before heading home to Port Hope.

After some quick shopping they wandered through the food court trying to decide what to eat, Finney testified in court Thursday at the trial of Christopher Husbands, the man who has admitted to shooting her son in the head.

Taylor wanted pizza, Connor sushi.

Surveillance video shows Finney and Connor buying sushi, with Husbands’ former girlfriend, LaChelle John, next in line beside them. Husbands stands nearby with bags from Sport Chek.

Less than 20 seconds after they sat down to eat, Finney heard five to eight gunshots.

A man told them to get down, and they got under the table, Finney testified.

“I looked at Connor and he had kind of a funny look on his face,” she said. As they tried to move back to a safer place, Finney saw blood pooling around Connor’s head.

That’s when she realized he’d been shot in the head.

Christopher Husbands killed two people and injured five others in the shopping center.

Connor, now 16 and much taller than he was, testified he needed four surgeries to recover.

He recalled feeling dizzy after being shot. “I remember my mom holding me. I was kind of dazed,” he said.

Before he passed out he recalled his sister, Taylor, now 17, speaking to him.

Finney, calm and matter of fact as she testified, said Connor still gets regular checkups and treatment for headaches.

Husbands has pled not guilty to two counts of first-degree murder, five counts of aggravated assault and one of criminal negligence causing bodily harm.

He has admitted to being the shooter who caused the deaths and injuries, leaving the jury to determine what his state of mind was at the time of the shooting.
