It’s unclear how he was able to use the gun while having no arms.
Loud sobs rang out in a packed Rock Island County courtroom Wednesday as a Moline teen was sentenced to 60 years in prison for fatally shooting a man and seriously injuring another man.
Lamaree E. Wilson-Neuleib, 17, dressed in dress shirt and tie, apologized for the May 20 fatal shooting of Zachary M. Phillips, 18, and wounding of Erik Roberson, 20.
“I know a lot of y’all hate me,” he said. “I’m sorry for all this.”
During an emotional, two-hour sentencing hearing, Judge F. Michael Meersman sentenced Wilson-Neuleib to 50 years on one count of first-degree murder and 10 years on a charge of aggravated battery with a firearm.
He must serve 100 percent of the sentence on the murder charge and 85 percent of the sentence on the battery charge, for a total of 58 ½ years.
He will be 75 when he is released.
Despite the teen’s “chaotic” childhood and history of mental health and substance abuse, Meersman said there was no excuse for what happened the day of the shooting.
“I just cannot wrap my head around the violence that you must feel you need to inflict upon somebody for whatever reason,” Meersman said.
Meersman called Wilson-Neuleib a “very dangerous man” and said he hopes he can find out what makes him “tick” during his time in prison.
Wilson-Neuleib, who was charged as an adult, will be transferred from the Mary Davis Detention Center in Galesburg, Ill., to the Illinois Department of Juvenile Justice until he turns 18 in February. He then will be transferred to an adult prison to serve his sentence.
Police say Wilson-Neuleib fired multiple shots at Phillips and Roberson both of whom were in the front of Phillips’ vehicle in the 4700 block of 53rd Street in Moline about 10:35 a.m. May 20.
Phillips was pronounced dead at Genesis Medical Center, Silvis, shortly after the shooting. Roberson was airlifted to University Hospitals, Iowa City, and later was released.
A third person in the backseat was not injured.
