The US has ordered China to close its consulate in Houston, Texas, by Friday – a move described as “political provocation” by Beijing.
The US State Department said the decision was taken “in order to protect American intellectual property”.
But China’s foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said it was “outrageous and unjustified”.
The statements came after unidentified individuals were filmed burning paper in bins in the building’s courtyard.
Tensions have been rising between the US and China for some time. President Donald Trump’s administration has clashed repeatedly with Beijing over trade and the coronavirus pandemic, as well as China’s imposition of a controversial new security law on Hong Kong.
Then on Tuesday, the US Department of Justice accused China of sponsoring hackers who had been targeting labs developing Covid-19 vaccines. Two Chinese nationals, who allegedly spied on US research companies and got help from state agents for other thefts, have been charged.
Why did the US say it was closing the consulate?
The US State Department released a statement shortly after Mr Wang spoke on Wednesday.
“We have directed the closure of PRC [People’s Republic of China] Consulate General Houston, in order to protect American intellectual property and American’s private information,” State Department spokeswoman Morgan Ortagus said.
The consulate is one of five in the US, not counting the embassy in Washington DC. It is unclear why this one was singled out.
They were using the consulate to steal intellectual properties?
Really?
Why wouldn’t they just steal it from the factories, which are in their own country, and which trade treaties signed say they have full access to?
Obviously, they would do that. It’s something that they’ve always done, that the corporations that moved their factories there in the 90s knew they were going to do. This is just intended to be an emotional trigger to explain away a bizarre action by the US government.
Closing down consulates is a major precursor to a hot war. The US and the USSR kept each other’s consulates open throughout the cold war.
The US is also accusing China of hacking the coronavirus vaccine. They indicted people, in fact.
Two Chinese nationals have been indicted for seeking to steal Covid-19 vaccine research and hacking hundreds of companies in the US and abroad, including defence contractors, the US Justice Department said on Tuesday.
Li Xiaoyu, 34, and Dong Jiazhi, 33, also targeted human rights activists in the US, China and Hong Kong, assistant attorney general John Demers alleged.
Li and Dong, who are believed to be in China, acted in some instances “for their own personal gain” and in others for the benefit of China’s Ministry of State Security, Demers said.
“China has now taken its place, alongside Russia, Iran, and North Korea, in that shameful club of nations that provide a safe haven for cyber criminals,” Demers said.
The hacking stuff is so retarded. You can’t ever prove anyone hacked anyone, unless you seize their computers and check them. Everyone knows that, but they just keep promoting hacking hoaxes.
The WikiLeaks dump of CIA hacking tools showed specifically that they had designed tools to make it look like a foreign government had done the hack. This means that the CIA – or anyone else with those tools, which the CIA admits are sold on the open internet – could have hacked it and used tools to make it look like the Chinese did it.
Furthermore, it’s possible that no one hacked it and the Justice Department just said they did. They don’t ever require proof of these things. For nearly three years, we had a witch hunt over “Russian hackers,” and the whole thing was based exclusively on the claims of a private security company hired by the Democrats. It was recently revealed that they were lying, and the entire thing was a gigantic hoax.
Maybe the Chinese did hack the coronavirus vaccine. Who knows. The only thing I know is that when the US says “trust us, there’s a foreign enemy you need to be very afraid of,” I do not trust them.
