Ukrainian authorities said Sunday that Russia’s military bombed an art school sheltering some 400 people in the port city of Mariupol, where heavy street fighting was underway weeks into a devastating Russian siege.
The fall of Mariupol would allow Russian forces in southern and eastern Ukraine to link up. But Western military analysts say that even if the surrounded city is taken, the troops battling for control there a block at a time may be too depleted to help secure Russian breakthroughs on other fronts.
Three weeks into the invasion, Western governments and analysts see the conflict shifting to a war of attrition, with bogged down Russian forces launching long-range missiles at cities and military bases as Ukrainian forces carry out hit-and-run attacks and seek to sever their supply lines.
Ukrainians “have not greeted Russian soldiers with a bunch of flowers,” President Volodymyr Zelenskyy told CNN, but with “weapons in their hand.”

“The block-by-block fighting in Mariupol itself is costing the Russian military time, initiative, and combat power,” the Washington-based Institute for the Study of War said in a briefing.
In a blunt assessment, the think tank concluded that Russia failed in its initial campaign to take the capital of Kyiv and other major cities quickly, and its stalled invasion is creating conditions for a “very violent and bloody” stalemate.
U.S. Defense Secretary Lloyd Austin said Ukrainian resistance means Putin’s “forces on the ground are essentially stalled.”

“It’s had the effect of him moving his forces into a woodchipper,” Austin told CBS on Sunday.
In Ukraine’s major cities, hundreds of men, women and children have been killed in Russian bombardment. Millions have moved to underground shelters or fled the country.
This is all such dumb bullshit.
There was never any plan to “take Kiev.” There is no evidence of any such plan.
Putin has established a policy of not killing civilians and limiting the number of buildings destroyed.
If he wanted to “take Kiev” and this was really a “war of attrition,” he could just cut the power and start leveling city blocks with missiles, which every military strategist since WWII has known is the only way to actually “take” a city.
Putin is pushing for either some kind of diplomatic solution – something that the people who control Zelensky have completely ruled out – or a military surrender.
If he is forced to literally “take Kiev,” it is going to take forever, as Ukrainians trap civilians in buildings to use them as human shields, and will open fire on civilians trying to leave cities. Therefore, the only option Russia has is to make in-roads into the city, and start unilaterally moving civilians out, protecting them from Ukrainian military fire.
We’ve already seen all of this in Mariupol. The military/Azov told civilians they were not allowed to leave, they trapped them in buildings and wouldn’t feed them, then they started bombing the places they’d huddled starving civilians.
The plan in Washington is to prolong this for as long as possible, to ensure that as many people as possible die, and that there is as much property destruction as possible. Meanwhile, they are selling the utterly nonsensical and Marvel comics-esque fantasy that Ukrainians are winning – even as they lose more territory every day – and citing Putin’s restraint as proof he’s “bogged down,” despite the fact that they are also claiming he is indiscriminately slaughtering civilians.
If he’s willing to indiscriminately slaughter civilians, then why doesn’t he just start leveling city blocks in Kiev with bombs?

This is all just absolute gibberish. There is no sense in any of it. We are dealing with the same level of lies we dealt with during the coronavirus hoax. And it might even be worse.
