Three men are behind bars suspected of attempting to rob and then shooting and killing a cab driver, who was answering a call on the West Bank Tuesday night.
Gretna police say that just before 8 p.m., they received several calls of gunfire near the intersection of Franklin and Rupp streets. Additional 911 calls reported that several men were fleeing the scene on foot from a Glenn’s cab at the same location.
“What it appears at this time is that a call had come into the cab company asking to pick up several fares in the area of Hancock and Rupp Street. It appears that the driver did make it to the location, the fares entered into the vehicle, a robbery was attempted, a scuffle ensued and the cab driver was shot multiple times,” said Deputy Chief Anthony Christiana of the Gretna Police Department.
Christiana says that as officers arrived on the scene, they spotted two of the suspects running from the area and an additional unit spotted the third suspect and attempted to stop him, and a foot chase ensued.
Christiana says the chase went from Burmaster Street in Gretna into Algiers. The chase continued to Hendee Court and Thayer Street, the old Fischer housing development, where the suspect ran behind several homes. A perimeter was set up and Gretna K-9s were deployed.
Police then found the suspect, identified as 17-year-old Jonah Brown, hiding behind a house in the area. Multiple weapons were also found.
As Brown was being chased and arrested, medical units responded to the cab driver who had multiple gunshot wounds. The cab driver, identified as 56-year-old Blake Helmer, has been driving cabs for over 20 years. Helmer was taken to the hospital and died of multiple gunshot wounds in surgery.
