A first date took a turn for the worse when a man arrived at a church parking lot to meet a woman he’d met online and was robbed.

According to police, 21-year-old Hunter Walls, of Antioch, drove to Hannaway Church in Columbia last Thursday night to meet the woman he’d connected with on the website MeetMe.com.

Walls told police he got out of his car and stood in the parking lot waiting for the 22-year-old woman who identified herself as “Megan” online.

He said that’s when two males jumped out from behind bushes on the side of the church and robbed him. One of the males punched Walls in the face and the other held one hand under his shirt as if he had a gun.

Walls fell to the ground and eventually handed over cash and a cell phone before they fled on foot.

He sustained a chipped tooth and some bruising to his face during the attack.

“I didn’t think something like this could happen to me,” said Walls. “I got catfished. They were probably all friends and she was just hook, line and sinker.”

Walls reported he believes “Megan” was working with the men when he was robbed.

His 19-year-old brother was in his car and witnessed the robbery. He was also threatened by one of the suspects but was unharmed.

Investigators told News 2 the victim had talked to “Megan” on the phone prior to the arranged meeting.

“When I was on the phone it was a female. It didn’t sound like anyone else was around her. She called me from someone else’s number afterwards though saying that her phone had died. That should have been a red flag that something might be up,” Walls told News 2.

The profile lists her as a 22-year-old white female. The messages she posted on the website were sexual, according to police, one of which said “fun for cash.”

Walls insisted he only showed up at the church because he’d been communicating with the woman and wanted to meet her in person so they could get some friends together to celebrate Halloween.

He told News 2 he’s met people from MeetMe.com before and never had any problems.

Police describe one of the suspects as a black male, about 5 feet, 9 inches tall. He was wearing an American flag bandana over his face and a brown jacket.

The other suspect is a Hispanic male, also around 5 feet, 9 inches tall with a thin mustache. He was wearing a blue hooded sweatshirt and sweatpants.

Both suspects are believed to be in their mid to late teens.

Investigators said they have some strong leads but no arrests have been made.
