A cook at a P.F. Chang’s restaurant charged with fatally stabbing a co-worker over the weekend thought the other man was talking about him in Spanish, prosecutors said Monday during the suspect’s arraignment.
Jaquan Huston, 23, of Salem was held without bail after a not guilty plea to first-degree murder was entered on his behalf in Peabody District Court.
Huston “perceived” that Elivelton Dias, 38, was talking about him before the stabbing in the kitchen area during the dinner rush at the Northshore Mall restaurant on Saturday night. Dias was an immigrant from Brazil, where Portuguese is the native language.
Huston fled the restaurant afterward and was arrested at his home.
“I did what I had to do,” Huston told police, according to prosecutors.
Dias became a father for the first time about two weeks ago, family and co-workers said.
