A driver who ran down and killed an avid Aston Villa fan as he crossed Birmingham’s Broad Street on a night out has been warned he faces a long prison sentence.
Fahid Saber, 21, admitted causing the death of pedestrian Jody O’Reilly in the smash in the early hours of December 15 last year.
Jody was hit by the VW Golf outside the Solomon Cutler pub, and Broad Street was shut down for three hours while police carried out investigations.
Appearing at Birmingham Crown Court, Saber, of Bromford Lane, Bromford admitted causing death by dangerous driving and a further charge of dangerous driving.
His Honour Judge Paul Farrer QC adjourned the case for pre-sentence reports to be prepared.
But he warned Saber, who has no previous convictions: “I make it clear the inevitable sentence is a prison sentence, and a long prison sentence.”
The judge added: “You have pleaded guilty to offences of extreme seriousness as you are, I suspect, well aware.
“You are 22 with a limited antecedent history. It seems right the court had more information on you.”
Saber was disqualified from driving on an interim basis until sentence is passed at Birmingham Crown Court on October 24.
He was warned if he failed to attend for sentence he would be committing a further offence.
Ardent Villa fan Jody died at the scene of the smash on Broad Street after a night out with friends.
The popular student, from Leixlip, County Kildare, had chosen Wolverhampton University just to be closer to Villa Park,
After his death an outpouring of grief from friends and family saw a massive campaign on social media call on Aston Villa to pay tribute.
Friend Ritchie Cartright Ball led the campaign which ended with a minute’s applause in memory of Jody before Villa’s boxing day match with Crystal Palace.
Paul Lambert went on to dedicate the club’s New Year’s day victory against Sunderland to Jody saying: “I’d like to dedicate the victory over Sunderland to Jody O’Reilly, who lost his life in tragic circumstances before he was due to come and support the team against Manchester United just before Christmas.
“I wasn’t immediately aware of what happened, but as soon as I found out I made contact with one of his closest friends to pass on my best wishes and to let the family know they were in my thoughts and prayers.
“As a father of four I can’t imagine what Jody’s family are going through.”
