“Yeah I guess that’s what you would call it a tragedy,” Brenda McDonald said, staring across the street at the house still shrouded in crime tape.
On Saturday, McDonald had boasted to friends how safe she feels inside her neighborhood.
“The very next morning I wake up and see cop cars and everything,” she said.
According to Heber Springs police chief Bobby Walker, officers received a call that 54-year-old Marcia Dye had been found deceased in her home.
“This is the first homicide that I know about since I’ve been chief, and I’ve been here four years,” Walker said.
The police report, saying inside the home showed signs of a struggle, and that they discovered Dye with a towel covering her face. The report lists her son Cameron Dye, 19, as suspect number one. Police haven’t released any further details of the scene or what they believe caused Marcia Dye’s death.
A suspect was arrested early Monday morning in the Edgemont area of Cleburne County. Walker would not confirm at the time the identity of who his officers had arrested.
“We have officers right now who have not been to bed they’ve been working on this,” Walker said Monday morning.
McDonald said she saw Cameron Dye at the home several days before police were called, and the police report estimates the crime occurred sometime between noon on Friday and 1:45 p.m. on Sunday.
“I know he came back on Friday and that was the first time I had seen him [Cameron Dye] in forever,” McDonald said. “He was over there Friday, yeah.”
By Monday afternoon, Cameron Dye was behind bars, his booking listing with Cleburne County listed the description as capital murder. Marcia Dye’s body is being sent to the State Crime Lab for an official cause of death determination. The investigative file from Heber Police will be turned over to prosecutors for official charges to be filed.
“We think we have the person who committed the crime in jail,” Walker said. “We don’t think there will be any more arrests.”
