Two Winter Haven nursing assistants were charged with battery of an elderly person after police say they were captured on video tormenting and hitting a 76-year-old Alzheimer’s patient.

On Wednesday, Winter Haven Police arrested Yashika Zenobiaha Jones, 28, and Rose Dorlean Blaise, 35, who work at Palm Gardens Nursing Home located at 1120 Cypress Gardens Blvd. S.E. in Winter Haven.

Police say an investigation uncovered the abuse on three separate occasions in October.

“This egregious behavior from these two who are supposed to be caring for our infirm is absolutely sickening,” said Winter Haven Police Chief Charlie Bird.

“There is absolutely no reason for any person, especially an elderly Alzheimer patient, to be treating like this and today those two workers are paying for their actions.”

Police found out about the abuse from Dale Wilson, 53, who is the son of the 76 year-old victim. Wilson made a report to the staff at Palm Gardens Nursing Home in early October after noticing unusual bruising on his father’s arms and legs. His father is in the advanced stages of Alzheimer’s and is unable to communicate. The staff was unable to explain the marks on the patient.

Fearing his father was being abused, Wilson set up a “nanny cam” inside of the victim’s room pointed directly at the bed. Wilson would frequently check the footage and found at least three incidents in October that showed staff members taunting and hitting the victim, according to police.

The incidents were recorded on October 7, 16 and 24 (see video above). Police say Jones is seen in the incidents on October 7 and 24. Blaise is seen in the October 16 incident.

Investigators say the video shows Jones and another certified nursing assistant, Oreal Motley, 28, of Lake Hamilton. The two were tending to the victim when Jones was seen rubbing her hand across the victim’s face, which disturbed him. Jones is then seen making punching motions towards the victim’s face in an obvious attempt to agitate him further.

Yashika Zenobiaha Jones and Rose Dorlean Blaise have both been charged with battery of an elderly person.

In the October 16 incident, investigators say video shows Blaise and certified nursing assistant Victoria Anucha, 51, of Davenport transferring the victim from a wheelchair to his bed.

During the transfer, the victim became agitated and began flailing his arms. Anucha is seen trying to calm the victim. However Blaise is observed stepping back and lunging toward the victim using her legs and feet to either stomp on his bare feet or kick him in the leg.

The victim is obviously in pain as he responds by leaning forward and reaching towards his legs. Once in a prone position on the bed, Blaise is then seen throwing the victim’s legs over to one side as he is being repositioned on the bed.

In the recorded October 24 incident, Jones is seen in the room tending to the victim with fellow certified nursing assistant Daphnee Louissaint, 21, of Winter Haven. The pair was changing the victim’s clothes.

Jones is seen making punching motions with a closed fist towards the victim’s face. Jones then grabs the victim’s wrists and the victim struggles trying to pull away from Jones.

Jones is then seen grabbing the victim by the wrists and forcing him to punch himself in the face with his own hands. Jones then moves to the foot of the bed and grabs hold of his ankles holding his legs down to keep him from sitting up.

Jones is then seen approaching the head of the bed making a motion as if to slap the victim in the face. When the victim puts his hand up in an obvious attempt to shield his face, Jones grabs his wrist, slaps the victim in the face with her other hand and then quickly runs away as the victim attempts to sit up.

Jones was taken into custody and booked into the Polk County Jail on two counts of Battery of an Elderly Person and Blaise was charged with one count of Battery on the Elderly, both are being held without bond.
