Every war in history, whether just or unjust, has been reduced and sold to the people as a moral struggle. Sometimes there were varying degrees of truth to this propaganda, sometimes there was none at all, but it is a constant that every military campaign has been framed as driven by a moral prerogative.
Just so, Americans fought Germany (twice) to save freedom, the Ottomans invaded Europe to spread Islam and Obama is now facing off against Russia to defend the unlimited right of men to engage in anal intercourse with other men, and to sell this behavior to children.
Recently, it was claimed that 59% of Americans approved of sanctions being used against Russia. Though polling is a questionable method of determining public opinion, for our purposes here we can take these numbers as accurate; I doubt they are very far off. As I cannot imagine more than 41% of the population is following the developing crisis very closely, nor would I suppose that anyone who is following it closely would approve of sanctions, it must be assumed that those who approved were basing their approval on a pre-Maidan conception of Russia.
A percentage of this uninformed 59% were likely typical Rush Limbaugh/Fox News “conservatives” who have bought into propaganda about Putin representing a “New Soviet Union” that is trying to take over the world. Older folks were so deeply imprinted with the idea of Soviet communism as the greatest ever threat to civilization that it is not very hard to sell them on such things, assuming they are not paying attention, and merely taking the various pundits at their word. We might also suppose that a percentage of that type of conservative would have said no to sanctions simply because Obama is pushing for them and they dislike Obama strongly.
A better part of that 59% who said yes, they do endorse a suicidal act of war against Russia, because Putin has refused to respect a revolutionary coup in the Ukraine, would have done so based on propaganda which attacks Russia for oppressing homosexuals.
Now, we should note what it is that they are opposing. In the West, we have come to take it for granted that because a person is born homosexual (a claim for which no scientific evidence supports), we have a duty to teach children about gay sex so that if they happen to be gay, they will know what to do. A second view, in opposition to the view the unscientific perspective that children are born gay, is that homosexuality is a learned behavior and that by teaching it to children you are actually encouraging them to take on this identity, and that certain among them will internalize it when they otherwise would not have. Putin’s laws do not outlaw homosexuality, but, as he takes the latter position – that teaching children about homosexualism can cause them to internalize the behavior as an identity – they merely make it illegal for adults to market homosexuality to children. This is a ban on all public displays of homosexualism, as children could be exposed to them, it is not, however, a ban on the behavior pattern of homosexuality.
This is interpreted, possibly accurately, as a moral judgment stating that it is better to be heterosexual than homosexual, and this is unacceptable to the Western mind, which has come to believe the opposite. The West accepts that a man who engages in anal sex with another man has an inalienable right to encourage children to do the same, and thus Obama has declared that Russia’s anti-homosexual propaganda laws “violate fundamental morality.”
It is on these grounds that the West is implicitly asserting moral superiority over Russia. Over the last year, Russia has become known in America for their anti-homosexual propaganda laws more than for any other aspect of their society. It will never be said aloud “we must act aggressively against Russia to defend the rights of homosexuals,” but this undertone booms every time we hear mention of Russia violating “democracy.”
I do not know that this is going to turn into a World War. I think eventually it may. But right now, we are facing a Cold War, and the moral justification of it is being grounded in the alleged attacks on homosexuals by the Russian Federation.
Thus, if World War 3 does begin, it will be fought for gay sex.
