You Remember When You Were Impressed by Robot Dogs Opening Doors?

It was only eight months ago that we were all so impressed by Boston Dynamics’ robot dogs opening doors.

In their latest video, you’ve got one of their bipedal upright robots doing parkour.

This progress is certainly not going to be slowing down any time soon.

To just put this in a little bit of perspective, ten years ago, the best selling smartphone looked like this:

And a decade before that…

Twenty years ago, video games looked like this:

And 30 years ago…

So it is very, very clear that these new technologies develop very, very rapidly. Especially when there is a consumer drive behind development. And that Boston Dynamics robot is looking like it will be good for something commercial pretty soon.

What will these robots look like in 10, 20 or 30 years?

I believe that in my lifetime, I will interact with robots who are completely indistinguishable from human beings. Westworld style.

The military is going to start pouring more billions into this very soon, and I think in ten years, we will be seeing the capacity for what we saw in the 2014 remake of Robocop, where they sent robots to occupy Iran.

Horrible movie, but this is a very, very good scene, as it is pretty much exactly what I picture this will look like in the pretty near future (hopefully not in Iran).

We should be having an open dialog as a society about what this all means for humans. Because there are a lot of other technologies being developed alongside robots – including human neural interfaces and human genetic engineering technologies – that are, together, going to make up quite the situation for humans.

It is a shame we’re not discussing this, and are instead fixated on gender pronouns and microaggressions.
