He was in the right place at the wrong time… or the wrong place at the right time…
WAVY:
More than a year after the murder of a Suffolk furniture store owner, a jury found the second of three suspects guilty Wednesday. Police found 82-year-old Donald Carter shot to death near Carter’s Furniture, on East Washington Street last September.
Officers arrested and charged Naomi Lambert, Leon Hayes and Katron Walker in the case. Lambert is currently serving 22 years in prison after pleading guilty to her role in Carter’s death and Hayes will face the same charges as Walker next year. Walker’s three-day trial ended Wednesday. The jury found him guilty of first degree murder, conspiracy, attempted robbery, and two-gun charges after two hours of deliberation.
Walker’s attorney, Michael Massie, said he was expecting a guilty verdict because Walker gave a three-hour confession to police that the jury had a chance to hear.
“He admitted in his statement to police that he pulled the trigger,” he said.
One year ago,10 On Your Side reported that according to police transcripts, Walker told detectives, “I never knew he was that nice of a person. That’s why it eats me up.”
Transcripts show Walker told detectives that on the night of the murder he was trying to get money from Carter and didn’t shoot on purpose. He said Carter was tussling with him, Walker flinched, the trigger went off, and he ran away.
After the verdict, when asked if Walker was remorseful, Massie replied, “Exceptionally. He expressed that in his statement, in a three-hour statement. He said it several times, how he was sorry this had happened.”
Walker’s uncle, Vance Walker, said the family is grateful for the way the Carter family has treated them.
