Two men are facing charges following a November, 2013 rape and murder of a 62-year-old woman in her own apartment.
According to police, Guy Marcus Allen, 42, and Eugene Mitchell, 56, sexually assaulted Sheila Devine in her Norbrook Drive apartment on Nov. 12, 2013. She later died of her injuries on Nov. 29.
Both Mitchell and Allen are facing murder, rape and sodomy charges. Police said Devine died of blunt force trauma and asphyxiation.
“She didn’t deserve it,” said neighbor Melinda Gikijak.
“She was kind hearted, giving, would give the shirt off her back,” said another neighbor, Jeffrey Reed.
Devine’s neighbors say the last two months since her death have not been easy.
“It was a big loss to the both of us,” Reed said.
Princilla McClure was there when Devine’s daughter found her.
“I seen her daughter, she went up the steps and I was still down here getting the bags out of my car and I just heard her daughter come out, she was all hysterical and all, and said her mother was unconscious and said her mother had been beaten and raped,” McClure said.
Reed says Thursday’s arrest of her alleged attackers brings some closure to those who knew her.
“I’m really happy they found them,” Gikijak said.
“I’m just grateful they’re caught,” Reed said.
Police say evidence collected at the scene led authorities to Allen and Mitchell nearly 2 months after the crime. Further investigation led police to believe Devine knew both men. Police say there was no sign of forced entry at Devine’s apartment in the Norfolk neighborhood off Fegenbush Lane.
