How can these creatures abscond once they have failed a border check? Do they not arrest them and stick handcuffs on them? Then, once they have disappeared, only 25% are ever caught.
Nature gave us a simple way of telling who should be here and who should not and it does not involve papers or passports.
Home Office data showed 3,527 absconded after failing border checks last year. Of those, only 846 (24 per cent) were recaptured.
That meant 76 per cent – about 2,700 people – remained at large.
The figures, released under Freedom of Information requests, show a dramatic increase in the proportion of illegals who vanish after being stopped at border entry checks for carrying false passports or incorrect visas.
Keith Vaz, chairman of the Commons home affairs select committee, said: “These figures are of particular concern given the threat from returning British jihadists.
“We should be getting better, not worse, at dealing with those who are absconding.
“I will be seeking an urgent explanation from the Home Secretary.”
Senior Tory MP Bernard Jenkin, also judged that absconding was “a matter of great concern”.
The figures show the greatest challenge facing border officials is dealing with ports handling coaches and the Eurostar at Lille in France.
As the statistics detail only people challenged by border officials the true scale of illegal immigration evading security is likely to be far worse.
The data showed, that although the total number who had absconded after being stopped at the border had fallen – from 9,362 in 2010 to 3,527 last year – the record for catching those who disappeared was worsening.
