The search is on for four killers who gunned down a man in East Albany. It’s apparently a random killing that’s left a family heartbroken.
The victim, Jamey Spurlock, was getting married the end of January. He and his fiancee picked out her wedding dress Sunday morning, just hours before he was murdered.
Carrie Kimbrell and her family will spend Christmas without her fiancee, Jamey Spurlock, after he was shot to death. “He was just an all out good person that didn’t deserve to be gunned down in the street for no reason. He didn’t deserve that, he didn’t deserve it,” she said.
Albany Police say 35 year-old Spurlock was shot in the chest during an attempted armed robbery on Mobile Avenue Sunday night. And Kimbrell saw it happen.
“My son and Jamey had gotten in my son’s car and they went down Mobile to the dirt road. My son got a flat tire and he called me because his car slid off into the sand trap.” Kimbrell says she and her daughter-in-law went to help, but when they got there she realized he forgot her jack.
When they were heading back to her home on Frotscher Street, she saw four men walking on the side of the dirt road and became suspicious. “I turned the vehicle around and I went to go back and just as I put the vehicle in reverse, that’s when we heard the gunshot.”
Kimbrell says she heard the gunshot, went around this curve and she believes her headlights scared the gunman off. “If I hadn’t come around that corner and my headlights hadn’t scared them off, my son would be laying up there on a slab in the morgue too. That’s the only thing that saved my son’s life.”
But it was too late for her fiancee…shot dead just hours after they picked out her wedding dress. “It was going to be maroon and white.” Now she’s left holding on to memories of who she calls a wonderful family man. “He was kind hearted and sweet, and loving and caring and he would do anything in the world for anybody. He would have given anybody anything. He didn’t need,” she said through tears.
And Kimbrell has a message for the gunmen who are responsible for Spurlock’s death. “Y’all still get to be with your families and go home to them until you’re caught. Because I guarantee you will be caught. And you will pay, I promise you that. With every fiber of my being, I promise you will pay.”
Authorities and Kimbrell are hoping anyone with information will come forward.
Jamey Spurlock was pronounced dead at the hospital. Albany Police have not released a description of the four men.
Kimbrell says the men took her son’s cell phone and wallet. If you have any information call Crimestoppers at 436-TIPS.
