Robert Huber was expected to be coming home, but he died in the hospital.

Two men have been identified as persons of interest in a Feb. 25 robbery at the home of a disabled military veteran, but there is not enough evidence to charge the men in the crime, an investigator said Tuesday.

Among the reasons investigators believe Joseph “JoJo” Johnson, 35,  and Melvin Safford, 30, are connected to the robbery are calls from “sources in the community pretty much just indicating that they were responsible,” Daphne police Cpl. Jason Vannoy said.

“We are still in the process of gathering evidence,” Vannoy said. “We are not ready to file charges at this point but that could very well change in the future.”

While investigators are still trying to gather evidence to make an arrest in the home invasion, the victim’s family is preparing for his funeral service at 10 a.m. Wednesday at Redeemer Lutheran Church, 200 South Section St. in Fairhope.

Robert Huber, 80, a veteran of the Korean and Vietnam wars, died Friday. His military career included service in the U.S. Air Force and the Navy.

It is not believed that Huber’s death resulted from the home invasion, officials said.

“I believe he had some type of liver disease,” Baldwin County Coroner Stan Vision said. “I talked with the doctor that treated him, and she said that other than some stitches over his eye, he really didn’t have any significant  injury from the attack.”

Huber was robbed after two men knocked on the door at his Church Avenue home at 11:15 p.m. Feb. 25. Huber was pushed from his wheelchair to the floor, police said.

A 50-inch flat screen Sharp television, a Mediacom cable box and a Sony DVD player were taken from Huber’s home, police said.

The Police Department searched the Silverhill mobile home of Johnson’s sister in March looking for items taken in the robbery but did not find anything, Vannoy said.

In a search warrant affidavit, Vannoy wrote police had received calls from four people alleging Johnson and Safford had been “bragging about the crime.”

“On 3/13/2014, I received a call from an extremely reliable informant who called to say that she overheard Johnson and another man discussing the stolen television from Huber,” according to the affidavit.

In April, Daphne police arrested Safford on a theft charge in a case that is unrelated to the home invasion. Safford is accused of stealing from a relative, Vannoy said.

Safford is suspected of taking a Coach purse, a Coach wallet, a 20-inch television and a RCA DVD player from Alethia Smith of Adams Street, according to an affidavit.

Safford is being held at the Baldwin County Corrections Center on a $5,000 bond.
