A man suspected in a homicide at a Mount Vernon apartment complex was taken into custody after a two-hour manhunt Tuesday morning.
Mount Vernon police were called to Hiawatha Village, a 73-unit apartment complex, in the 900 block of Beech Street at about 8:10 a.m. Tuesday.
Upon arrival, police found 80-year-old Marilyn Eversole deceased in the apartment.
A second victim, identified only as a home health aide for Eversole, was found injured on a bathroom floor. She was transported to Knox Community Hospital.
According to police, a suspect in the homicide was identified as 34-year-old Tyrone Caldwell, and a search for him, and a person of interest began.
The Knox County Sheriff’s Office reported that Caldwell was taken into custody at about 11 a.m. Tuesday.
Caldwell was taken to the Knox County Jail, charged with one count each of aggravated murder and aggravated burglary. He is scheduled to appear in court Wednesday morning.
Officials said a 36-year-old man was also taken into custody as a person of interest, but was released without charges.
Pleasant Street Elementary School, Dan Emmett Elementary School, and Northgate Head Start were placed on modified lockdown during the search.
A modified lockdown was described as heightened security, postponed recesses, and all students that attend class in modular buildings were brought inside.
