UPDATE:
MPs have signed a thing.
BBC:
More than 70 MPs and peers have signed a letter urging the home secretary to ensure Julian Assange faces authorities in Sweden if they want his extradition.
The Wikileaks founder, who is now in UK custody, was arrested on Thursday after years in Ecuador’s London embassy.
Sweden is considering whether to reopen an investigation into rape and sexual assault allegations against him.
This is definitely better for our lad than being forced into the US.
Original article follows.
Well, going to Sweden to deal with a honk-honk rape hoax would be better than going to America to deal with a honk-honk posting something on the internet hoax.
Or at least, you would think that.
Julian Assange may yet face rape charges in Sweden as the battle for extradition of the WikiLeaks founder heats up.
Assange was arrested and dragged out of the Ecuadorian embassy in London on Thursday, bringing an end to his seven-year stay after seeking asylum in 2012 to avoid extradition to Sweden over sexual assault charges levelled against him.
Those charges were dropped in May 2017, but Swedish prosecutors say they are now re-examining the case after a request by one of the alleged victim’s lawyers.
“After media reports that Julian Assange has been arrested in London, the counsel for the injured party has requested the Swedish preliminary investigation concerning rape be resumed,” the Swedish Prosecution Authority said in a statement.
“We will now examine the case in order to determine how to proceed.”
The prosecution service said it did not have a timetable for when any decisions on the case would be made, but added the statute for limitations would not expire until August 2020.
The alleged victim’s lawyer, Elisabeth Massi Fritz, told the ABC she hoped prosecutors would “make the only correct decision to resume the preliminary investigation” and request Assange be extradited to Sweden.
As we saw, Labour is pushing for Assange not to be sent to the US. So I guess sending him to Sweden to face charges of not telling a woman he wasn’t wearing a condom might be some kind of compromise just to get him out of the country.
And ironically, Sweden would be much less willing to send him to the US than the Torys would be.
They might put him in jail for a while to go through some kind of absurd and humiliating monkey trial where he’s forced to give an explanation for why he took a condom off, be forced to apologize, and then be allowed to flee to Russia.
Or, Labour will take power before a decision is made and let Assange walk out.
I figure Pompeo had to have had a solid plan with Theresa before he made this move, but Theresa has her own very serious problems right now and presumably doesn’t want a bunch of backlash for sending a popular counter-culture figure to the Dark Lord Durango Blimpf.
Whatever happens, this is probably going to take a very long time.
