It seems it’s a red light to equality in one Austrian city after a far-right traffic boss took charge.
Markus Hein ordered that pedestrian lights intended to support gay rights should be removed from the streets of Linz and replaced with ordinary signals.
The lights, which showed two women, two men and a mixed pair, will now be taken down.
The idea came from Vienna where the lights were erected at 47 crossings.
State broadcaster ORF cited Linz councilman Hein of the right-wing and gay-skeptic Freedom Party as saying he ordered the switch because crossing lights should have no other purpose than regulating traffic. The replacements now show the stick man normally used in Austria.
Hein, who is in charge of traffic issues in Austria’s third-largest city, took office after municipal elections in September.
