Following afternoon deliberations on Thursday, the jury found Shawn Sturdivant guilty of first degree murder for fatally shooting retired Marine Joshua David Lindauer in 2017.
He has been sentenced to serve life in prison without the possibility of parole for the murder charge as well as approximately 1-to-3 years for having a firearm as a felon.
“I’m disappointed,” Sturdivant’s attorney Billy Joe Morgan said of the verdict. “I thought at most he would get second degree murder and at least manslaughter.”
However the trial, Morgan said, more or less went how the defense wanted it to go. Morgan said he believes the defendant’s attempts to wash his hands and burn his shirt after the incident was likely what led the jury to believe Sturdivant is guilty.
