Opelousas police have arrested a 43-year-old man for attempted aggravated rape of a 10-year-old girl.
Edward Broussard, of 114 Highway 178, Opelousas, was being held in the Opelousas City Jail Tuesday.
The incident occurred on Dec. 4, when police were called to a residence in 1300 block of Ina Clare Drive. There, police said, the girl’s mother told them a bald black male had attempted to sexually assault her child.
The child then informed the officers that the man grabbed her, threw her to the ground and pinned her down. She began to scream and kick, striking her attacker in the groin, giving her just enough time to get up and run home. Officers at the scene gathered critical information and subsequently forwarded this information to investigators. The public also provided information, which led to Broussard.
Tuesday, police said, Broussard was located with the help of the States Probation/Parole Office and transported to the Opelousas Police Department.
Broussard was then positively identified by the girl as the man who attacked her.
Broussard will go before a magistrate today.
Opelousas Police Chief Perry Gallow said Broussard, a convicted sex offender, was paroled out of Louisiana State Penitentiary at Angola Nov. 7 after serving 21 years of a 30-year sentence.
“I investigated this particular case and arrested Broussard on Feb. 1, 1994, for attempted forcible rape,” said Gallow, who was a detective sergeant at the time.
“Broussard is considered a tier-three sex offender and should not be allowed to go free,” said Gallow. “I don’t often give my opinion on untried cases; however, I am very aware of what he did to his victim in February of 1994 and what could have happened to this child. I want to thank those who assisted OPD by providing invaluable information which led to his arrest.”
