WIS:

The Columbia Police Department says an arrest has been made in connection with the murder of a man who was gunned down outside his home in July.

Chief Skip Holbrook made the announcement Thursday on the arrest of 45-year-old Ibin Kenta Patterson.

CPD investigators previously made no arrests in connection with the death of 32-year-old Timothy Gentry, who was fatally wounded in the chest on the corner of Beaufort Street and River Drive in July.

Patterson is charged with murder, possession of a weapon during the commission of a violent crime, and possession of a firearm and ammunition by a person convicted of a felony.

Holbrook said Patterson obtained the weapon in this case from 49-year-old Willette June Wilson. Wilson was also charged with unlawful transfer of a firearm after turning herself in last August.

Gentry was a Clemson graduate who worked with children at the Shandon Presbyterian Child Development Center. His family said he was just days away from proposing to his girlfriend before he was killed.

A suspect was never identified, but CPD officers said the suspect was described as “a thin, dark-skinned black male with a medium height, last seen wearing a white tank-top style shirt and dark pants” with short braids or dreadlocks.

Patterson, according to a records check, has pending charges against him that include armed robbery, kidnapping, weapons possession and attempted murder in an unrelated case from July 2015.

In that case, law enforcement officials said Patterson exchanged gunfire with Columbia police officers after police said he pointed a gun at two women while demanding their belongings. The victims complied and were not harmed during the incident.
