A Newport News man was arrested on Wednesday, and is now facing sexual assault charges.
20-year-old Devante Edmonds, of the 300 block of Hickory Avenue in Newport News, is charged with three counts of aggravated sexual battery and two counts of attempted sodomy by force.
On September 27, 2013 police responded to a local hospital in reference to a past sexual assault.
The mother of the victim told police that her 7-year-old daughter was inappropriately touched by her male babysitter. The babysitter, Devante Edmonds, had been babysitting the child in his home on September 26, 2013. The mother stated that her daughter told her about the incident when they were driving home to her residence in Hampton. The victim also told her mother that this was not the first time it had occurred. Officers notified the Special Victims Unit, which began its investigation.
Edmonds was arrested at his home on Hickory Avenue on December 11, 2013 at 10:30 a.m
