A man accused of beating a puppy to death with a metal rod last month has turned himself in to police and is now charged with animal cruelty, officials said Thursday.
Gary L. Kennedy, who was also wanted on an assault charge, has been in Bexar County Jail in lieu of $50,000 bail since Aug. 22. Officials initially said he was 53, but public records show him to be 51.
Kennedy is accused of killing an 8-month-old Shar Pei named Boscoe on July 3 in the 100 block of Canton Street on the East Side. Security footage of the incident showed him dragging the dog’s body away in a garbage bag, officials said.
The case was one of three fatal incidents of animal cruelty that police and Animal Care Services investigators have been working on this summer.
On July 11, a teacup Chihuahua puppy was found asphyxiated and dumped in the middle of the street near Commercial Avenue and Southwest Military Drive. The dog, who was posthumously named Mia by ACS staff, weighed less than 5 pounds and was bound in black tape.
Authorities are still looking for suspects in that case and are asking people to come forward if they know anything about Mia’s death.
And on July 18, a man allegedly poured gasoline over the head of his wife’s dog and lit the pet on fire. The beagle, named Cali, had to be euthanized because her burns were so extensive.
Charles Compton, 24, was arrested and charged with animal cruelty — a state jail felony that, if he’s convicted, could result in a sentence of up to two years incarceration.
Animal cruelty in San Antonio can be reported by calling 311. In the county, it can be reported to the Sheriff’s Office at 210-335-6000.
