A 36-year-old man was charged Monday with first-degree murder in connection with the weekend shooting death of a Belleville man, who police said was not the intended target.

Dashon P. Hinkle, of Belleville, was charged Monday afternoon by St. Clair County State’s Attorney Brendan Kelly with first-degree murder. Hinkle is accused of shooting John D. Fath Sr., 53, at 11 p.m. Saturday at Fath’s home at 416 N. 40th Street. Fath was shot as he opened his front door.

The Major Case Squad of Greater St. Louis was called in to investigate the murder.
