Jake Rameau was killed by Blacks while chasing after one who had stolen his brother’s car.

Defendant Robert Gee appeared to suffer a medical emergency in the courtroom early Thursday, Feb. 26, after a judge read the verdict of first-degree murder and first-degree premeditated murder for the death of Jacob Rameau.

Gee was taken out of the courtroom by deputies and appeared to be unconscious as Hicks called for a break in the hearing.

There were no open seats in the courtroom Thursday, Feb. 26, when Gee previously sat at the defense table waiting to learn his fate in connection to the shooting death of Rameau, a 26-year-old motorcyclist, last June.

As he did throughout the bench trial that started last week, Gee — before he suffered the apparent medical issue — sat with a stiff posture, showing no emotion Thursday, next to his defense attorney, Fred J. Lesica.

Several armed deputies stood along the walls of Judge Timothy G. Hick’s courtroom as Hicks prepared to read the verdict for Gee accused of shooting Jacob Rameau as Rameau, on a motorcycle, chased down one of Gee’s friends who stole Rameu’s brother’s vehicle on June 26.

Robert Gee fainted after hearing the verdict.

That brother, Christopher Hotz, was in the front row of the courtroom on Thursday, along with others.

Prior to the break, Hicks said it was a difficult case to rule on.

“You might think that these kinds of tasks get easier at times. They don’t get any easier. This man, Jacob Rameau, lost his life in his situation,” Hicks said, holding up a photo of Rameau, “and this man, Robert Earl Gee, if convicted, will spend the rest of his life in prison.”

When the verdict was read — guilty of first-degree murder, as well as the other three counts sought by the Muskegon County Prosecutor’s Office — Gee never changed his expression. He never turned to face his family, nor did he look at Lesica or those around him.

“Mr. Rameau died as the result of a gunshot wound, there’s no doubt. It was the cause of death,” Hicks said. “Can we connect Mr. Gee to the weapon that fired the bullet?”
