A man was convicted Wednesday of abducting a woman from a Metro bus and raping her.

Darnell Anthony Clemons, 25, went to trial this week on kidnapping and rape charges stemming from the Nov. 11, 2011 incident. After two hours of deliberation on Wednesday, a St. Louis Circuit Court jury found him guilty of both felonies. Sentencing has been set for Jan. 16.

Prosecutors dismissed two counts of armed criminal action prior to trial.

Authorities said that Clemons approached the woman while she was on the bus and threatened to shoot her if she tried to get off. Other passengers observed the interaction and it was captured by video surveillance.

Authorities said Clemons threatened the other passengers as well, then forced the woman off the bus when it arrived at the 5300 block of North Kingshighway, in the Mark Twain neighborhood.  He ordered her into a rental apartment, authorities said, then raped her and threatened her to keep her from reporting it.

At the time, Clemons was wanted for a forcible rape in Maplewood and for a domestic assault case in St. Louis. It was unclear Wednesday whether charges were ever filed in those cases.

After the incident, Metro officials reported they had placed the bus operator on paid leave while the agency investigated the allegations. They declined further comment, calling it an employment matter, but said the investigation would include a look at whether the agency’s procedures were followed that night. Officials said the driver of the bus claimed to have been unaware of any trouble that night.

A spokesperson could not be reached for comment Wednesday.
