Clearwater Police have arrested a teen for murder in the mysterious death of Lydia Ann Tross, 41, whose decomposed body was found Saturday near the Pinellas Trail.

Dewayne Jones, 18, of Clearwater, has been charged with first-degree murder, police announced Tuesday. Police say robbery is the apparent motive.

“Dewayne Jones made conflicting and incriminating statements that provided probable cause for his arrest for murder in the first degree,” said Clearwater Police Chief Daniel Slaughter.

Tross’ nude body was found by a man and his grandson in a ditch north of Fairmont Street near the Pinellas Trail while they were picking flowers on Saturday. Tross, of Clearwater, was reported missing on August 5, the same day police say Jones killed her around dusk.

Detectives say a family member of Jones’ found items belonging to Tross in the teen’s possession. That family member called police.

Just last month, Jones was arrested by the Pinellas County Sheriff’s Office on drug charges including possession of cocaine, possession of marijuana and obstructing or resisting an officer without violence and was released on bond.

Chief Slaughter has stepped up patrols on the trail and told 8 On Your Side he favors  the installation of surveillance cameras, something that St. Petersburg already decided to do after a trail robbery and pistol whipping of a cyclist in February.

On the other hand, Slaughter doesn’t believe what happened to Tross is reason for alarm by other cyclists.

“It’s still early but I would say it’s probably more of a scenario that it was a random act,” said Slaughter. “[Jones] came across a potential victim and decided to take advantage of it.”

Even though Jones is in custody, detectives still are asking for the public’s help in the case. Anyone with information in the Tross slaying should call police at 562-4242 or email tips@myclearwater.com. Late Tuesday police have posted electronic sign boards on the trail soliciting more tips in the case.

Despite the gravity of what happened at least one regular trail user told 8 On Your Side she is undeterred from cycling in the vicinity of the murder.  Even still, 25-year-old Katie Snyder says she doesn’t ride alone and she doesn’t ride at night.

The Pinellas Trail closes at sunset, right around the time when Lydia Tross became Clearwater’s latest murder victim.
