A woman who admitted raping a 7 year-old boy is going to prison.
Alicia Gaston was in court Friday to face her punishment. Very little is known about the allegations against her, beyond the fact that the victim is a 7 year-old boy and the rape happened in April 2012.
Gaston was facing a possible life sentence had she gone to trial and been convicted of the charges against her. She instead pleaded guilty and was facing a maximum of 11 years.
This was not a case of her attacking a stranger. Gaston knew the boy through one of his relatives. She spoke in court Friday about her connection to the child.
“I fought for that little boy, I fought my hardest for him, I know I’m pleading guilty to this charge, but in my heart, I know I’m innocent,” Gaston said.
Her mother and her minister also spoke on her behalf, asking for leniency. No one from the boy’s family spoke on his behalf.
The prosecutor handling the case told Judge Beth Myers that he is afraid to be in the same room with Gaston.
Myers did not give Gaston the maximum, instead sentencing her to 10 years. She will also be required to register as a tier three sexual offender for life.
