An Atlanta Falcons football player has been kicked off the team after being accused of killing his girlfriend’s dog.
According to a spokesperson with Gwinnett County police, 23-year-old Prince Shembo’s girlfriend called authorities on April 19 to report that Shembo killed her dog.
Shembo was a linebacker with the Falcons.
According to the police spokesperson, Shembo’s girlfriend said that she took her Yorkie to Shembo’s apartment on April 15 and left the two alone.
When his girlfriend returned, she said she found her dog unresponsive, according to the police spokesperson.
The dog was taken to an animal hospital where it later died.
Shembo’s girlfriend said that in a conversation with him by phone the next day, he admitted to kicking the dog.
After an investigation by Gwinnett County police, an arrest warrant was issued for Shembo Friday, charging him with aggravated cruelty to animals.
The police spokesperson said the dog had “significant internal injuries” and died due to blunt force trauma.
The Falcons released the following statement Friday afternoon:
“We are aware of the charges that have been filed against Prince Shembo. We are extremely disappointed that one of our players is involved in something like this. Accordingly, we have decided to waive Prince Shembo.”
Shembo turned himself in to police Friday night. CBS46 captured him walking into the Gwinnett County Jail, but he had no comment.
